Collierville Animal Services Brings Day Camps to Carriage Crossing
Thursday, Jun 23, 6:00PM
Collierville, TN - Attendees of Collierville Animal Services’ summer camps will get a break from the usual heat this year as the group is bringing its one-day camps to its Animals on the Avenue adoption location at the Avenue Carriage Crossing.
“This isn’t our usual camp,” said CAS Director Nina Wingfield of the Animals on the Avenue One Day Kids Camps. “We’re having them at The Avenue, which is pretty exciting. It’s going to be all inside (and) it’s going to be cool.” With camps usually held at the Collierville Animal Shelter on South Street, Wingfield said the decision was made to move the camps to The Avenue Carriage Crossing due to the anticipated construction of a humane education facility at the shelter.
Additional changes include fewer weeks being offered, as well as smaller classes. The camps include a kitten camp on June 15, 16 and 17; a puppy camp on June 22, 23 and 24; an exotics and wildlife camp on July 13, 14 and 15; and an animal careers camp on July 20, 21 and 22..jpg)

All camps will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a $40 cost, which includes a T-shirt. Children will not be allowed to attend multiple days of a single camp and will be limited to two total camps for the summer.
Wingfield said with classes being limited to 15 children instead of the usual 20, camps are, “going to be more hands-on this year.” In the past, she said there has been a lot of time spent cooling down from the heat during camps at the shelter, but that the air conditioned Carriage Crossing location will help eliminate that lost time.
With the camps moving from away from the shelter, Wingfield said there will still be an opportunity for campers and their families to visit the shelter and see more of the animals available for adoption.
A family day, featuring an ice cream social, will be held at the shelter at the end of every camp. Campers will also have their camp artwork displayed during the event. “Part of the camp really enhances our adoptions,” Wingfield said. “We wanted to make sure they would still get to experience the shelter and see the animals that are up for adoption.
Wingfield said parents interested in sending children to one of the camps should move quickly with the limited space. Waiting lists will be created if a particular camp fills up. She added the camps are a, “great way to spend your summer, learning about animals and about how you can be a part of the Collierville Animal Shelter.”
Camp applications must be turned in at the shelter, which is located at 603 E. South St., and fees must be paid for by check or cash. For more information, call the shelter at 457.2670.
